build or buy???

Ok, so as much as I would love to be, I am not the queen of DIY.  Heck, I am not even in the court. But, I am debating making an upholstered headboard for my daughter's room. The only thing is I found one I could buy at Ballard Designs for a not too bad price. Do I build or buy??

I have thought about the pros and cons of both--

Store Bought

Pros-
  • No work involved besides the click of my mouse
  • Can buy ready-made slipcovers for it that I can toss in the washer when it gets dirty
  • Can have slipcover monogrammed with her initials
Cons-
  • Could potentially be spending more money than it costs to make one
  • Pre-determined shape; no chance to to get creative

DIY (based on a headboard from Dwell Studio)

Pros-
  • I have a handy husband who happens to have the majority of July off, which means plenty of time to help me with this project
  • Get to create the exact shape I want

Cons-
  • I have absolutely zero patience when it comes to this stuff
  • Afraid the cost to build the headboard will equal to the cost to buy

What to do? What to do??

I completely understand your dilemma. I am not a DIY'er either. Not enough time in the day!. It would be a great thing to at least try, especially since the hubby will be there to help. If it doesn't work, then move on to Plan B! Either way, Im sure it will turn out lovely!

I did one! It's super easy, once you have the supplies it takes less than an hour. here is the link...you want a rounded top, that you would have to do with a saw...easy as well.

Let me know what you think!

First of all, how awesome it is to have a husband who is off for the month of July!

I can see your dilemma, just remember that your time is definitely worth something here as well. I'm sure you could do it, but is it worth the time you will have to give?

If the headboard to buy is less than $250, buy. If it is more, make. Good luck!

I guess if you have a handy husband, then build it because you can customize it in any way you want, perhaps extra padding, a different shape, extra height, the possibilities are endless. And if the project is successful, you saved some money and you can always say, I designed it myself and my wonderful husband built it for me. How awesome is that? And if all else fail, there is always plan B, right? So, go for it!

Handy husband at home? I would make one. But I am a DIY kind of gal. Check out this one I made for my daughter {it made it onto HGTV.com!}

If I were you, maybe skip the buttons, would make it mug easier. The nice thing about making it yourself is you can pick the shape and the fabric!

I have been trying to decide the same thing! My younger son's room is the old guest room so he inherited a queen sized bed. It is so hard to find a queen bed that doesn't look too adult plus they are so expensive! Also, since it is a queen bed, both kids do a lot of jumping on it so I think an upholstered headboard is the way to go! I will be interested to see what you do!

I made one and am glad that I did. I searched and gathered tutorials from several different bloggers DIY's and came up with my plan. I think my biggest expense was the foam, I wanted it to be really padded so I got 3" foam or something like that which costs more. It ended up costing more than I thought it would but it was still less than what I would have paid for one already made after shipping added in.

You can definitely DIY. I have done a few for people and while I have not yet put them on my blog, Design*Sponge had a post that was a big help for me (http://www.designspongeonline.com/2009/09/diy-video-graces-upholstered-otomi-headboard.html)
Beautiful blog!
